The former pub The Hangman's Inn in Guernsey is to be developed into a funeral home.

The Co-Operative Society has bought the site and its current owner, Argent Funeral Services, which is based in St Peter Port.

Argent bought the building in St Andrew in 2006 and got permission for the development the following year.

It was unable to secure the funding needed for the project and the site has been empty for seven years.

Colin Macleod, the chief executive of The Channel Islands Co-operative Society, said it had been looking to move into the funeral business in Guernsey since it bought De Gruchy's Funeral Care in Jersey in 2009.

Work will begin on the site soon and is due for completion in the second half of 2014.

Argent will then leave its premises in Doyle Road and trade at the Hangman's Inn site under the name Argent Funeral Care.
