Guernsey car width tax 'will harm tourism' says supplier

Introducing a vehicle width tax could impact on tourism, according to a Guernsey hire car supplier.

The Guernsey Motor Trades Association has made the comments on behalf of member Bougourd Ford, which supplies 65% of the island's hire cars.

A spokesman said the charge would lead to its parent company only registering small cars in the island, which would impact on families of five or more.

Exemptions for the duty, up to £2,400 per vehicle, have yet to be decided.

The amount of tax is calculated based on the size of the vehicle. It is expected to be due when vehicles are purchased or imported into the island.

"Environment will look at special cases when drafting the new duty and this will include hire cars," tweeted Deputy Yvonne Burford.
