Older people in Douglas, Isle of Man, could be asked to move to smaller homes to free-up larger properties for families, the corporation has said.

New tenancy agreements have been sent out in a move to reduce the waiting list for council properties.

But South Douglas MHK David Cretney said the idea had upset some tenants who are worried they may have to leave homes they have lived in for decades.

The corporation defended the move saying it "made sense".

Councillor David Ashford, a member of Douglas Corporation's Public Health and Housing Committee, said he believed that older people whose children had left home would often prefer a smaller place to live.
