A Manx politician is calling for three neighbouring local authorities to pool their resources to empty bins and pick up kerbside recycling.

In an effort to save money, leader of Douglas Borough Council David Christian has said he will speak to Onchan and Braddan local authorities about his ideas.

Currently the three co-operate on the recycling scheme, operated by Douglas, but collect bins individually.

"We have tough times ahead," he said.

There is currently a government-funded three-year pilot scheme for recycling running but it only has one year left.

Mr Christian said he wanted to address the issues now to ensure the scheme would continue in the future.

"We have said for a number of years there are too many bin wagons on the island."
