A football club has held a minute of applause before a match in tribute to a student from the Isle of Man who was run over and killed by a police car in Sheffield.

Jamie Haslett, 19, from Onchan, was studying sports and business management at Sheffield Hallam University.

The former St Ninian's High School pupil died on Wednesday morning.

Harry Wade, chairman of Laxey Football Club, said: "He was a lovely kid and one we'll really miss."

He added: "Jamie's family wanted us to have a minute of applause instead of a minute's silence. I think that is what Jamie would have wanted too."

The car which hit Mr Haslett was responding to a request by an ambulance crew, police said.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is investigating and is keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident.
