The Manx government has urged residents to report potholes on the island's roads following the recent cold snap.

The Department of Infrastructure said many potholes had started to appear after the snow and ice in December.

Water trapped in and under the road surface froze and expanded. The road surface then broke up, leading to potholes, the department said.

Highway services manager Nigel Foster said the holes needed to be repaired "as a matter of urgency".

"Over the new year period the focus will be on making safe the worst of the defects so that they don't cause accidents, damage or injury," he said.

"Next week, once the full workforce has returned to work after the Bank Holiday, every effort will be made to catch up with the necessary repairs."
