New skate park to open in Jersey

A new skate park for youngsters in Jersey is to due open in October.

The park, in St John, will be on the site of a former tennis court at the parish's recreation centre.

Organisers said that they were ordering the equipment that was needed to build it and that it would feature pipes and ramps for skaters to use.

Former parish deputy Andrew Lewis, who is leading the project, said he hoped other parishes would follow and provide more facilities for young people.

He said: "Often teenagers are overlooked when it comes to play equipment.

"We're good at providing small play parks for toddlers; but, over the age of nine or 10, we're not very good at providing facilities for them.

"We felt in St John we'd like to take the lead and provide something for teenagers."
