Jersey hospital's needle exchange service changed

Needle exchange opening hours in Jersey have changed at the island's General Hospital following safety concerns.

The 24-hour exchange service was offered to prevent drug users swapping needles which could carry infections.

The service is now only available at the hospital during out-of-office hours and on bank holidays.

Anyone wishing to exchange needles during weekdays could go to the island's Alcohol and Drug Service, health bosses said.

Andrew McLaughlin, the interim hospital director, said the service was being restricted to times when fewer people where on site after some needles were found to have been carelessly disposed of.

He said: "We were finding perhaps two or three around the hospital a week and clearly that's totally unacceptable in a hospital environment."
