Jersey road crash kills driver and injures children

A 34-year-old woman has died and four people, three of them children, have been seriously hurt in a road crash.

The five were in a Daihatsu Charade when it crashed at Haut Croix, Jersey, at about 1445 BST on Sunday.

Driver Maria Sousa Pestana died in hospital. A 22-year-old woman, a 12-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl are in intensive care at a UK hospital.

A 10-year-old boy also in the car is in a comfortable condition at Jersey General Hospital.

It took an hour for emergency crews to get the five out of the vehicle using hydraulic cutting equipment.

The woman was thought be driving from St John via La Rue Militaire, police said, and no other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

The three who were flown to the UK are in Southampton Hospital for specialist treatment.
