Jersey legal event focuses on social networking

A legal seminar being held on Jersey will focus on the use of social media within law.

The event will look at using social media such as Twitter and Facebook to provide legal information for lawyers and citizens alike.

Professor Richard Susskind is the main speaker at the Adding Value to event.

He said he thinks Jersey could host an online community for people to exchange legal information in the future.

Social networking

Professor Susskind said: "One of my fascinations is that citizens can go online and find out what their obligations are, what they're entitled to, without contacting lawyers.

"I'm interested in social networking, Facebook, Linked In and other such systems so people can come together and share their in-site and their experiences."

Professor Susskind, advisor to the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, said that rather than taking work away from legal firms, it could help them to become specialists in certain areas.

"An online legal community. It's early days for that, but I think you could do that in Jersey in ways that actually larger jurisdictions might find more formidable."

Professor Susskind designed the Jersey Legal Information Board website which contains all published laws and judgements in Jersey.
