Channel Islands could be part of French marine park

The Channel Islands are being asked if they want to be part of a marine park being set up by the French government.

The French Marine Protected Areas Agency wants to manage the sea around its coastline and include the Channel Islands in the Bay of Granville area.

A two-year study has begun looking at how the sea is used in the area, both commercially and for leisure purposes.

The French authorities are looking at the level of involvement the Jersey and Guernsey governments want.

Jersey's government was approached last year and recently officials from France have been in the island.

If it goes ahead the Channel Islands will be part of a wider management plan agreed between the French government and the islands' governments.
