Black and Decker inventor Ron Hickman dies

Tributes have been paid to Jersey inventor Ron Hickman who died in hospital aged 78, after suffering from a long illness.

He was best known for inventing the Black and Decker Workmate.

Mr Hickman also worked as a car designer for the Rob Walker Lotus team and designed the Lotus Elan.

His friend, former Formula 1 racing driver and local car garage owner, Derek Warwick, told BBC News he would be dearly missed.

"He was a kind, generous man," he said.

Mr Hickman passed away on Thursday morning.
