A UK company is to run the docks in Jersey after the stevedore firm George Troy and Sons went out of business.

Solent Stevedores, which runs services in Southampton and on the River Thames, said it would re-employ existing workers.

The company beat four others to be the only provider of dock workers in the island.

The Port of Jersey said local firms were interested but an interview panel chose the UK company.

It employs more than 100 people in the UK and has assets of £1.9m.

The company said it hoped to employ a locally qualified stevedore manager within six months.

George Troy and Sons went out of business with the loss of 30 jobs.
