Man jailed in Jersey over child abuse images

A man has been jailed for two years for downloading indecent images of children from the internet.

Atanas Spasov Kakarchev, 43, of St Helier, downloaded 125 indecent images and seven films between June 2011 and May 2012.

He was sentenced by the Royal Court by Deputy Bailiff William Bailhache.

Police searched Kakarchev's room on 31 May 2012 and found the images on his laptop and hard drive.

In his defence, the court heard Kakarchev, who is from Bulgaria, was very sorry and ashamed and was willing to take part in a sex offenders treatment programme.

Deputy Bailiff William Bailhache said he found it "incomprehensible that anyone would want to watch such films".

He said the two year sentence represented the abhorrence felt within society for these crimes.

Kakarchev will be placed on the sex offenders register for at least five years and the court recommended he be deported at the end of his sentence.
