Jersey minister suggest free St Helier parking

Free parking should be introduced in St Helier for up to a year, according to Jersey's Economic Development Minister.

Senator Alan Maclean said it could be part of a range of measures to encourage people to shop in the town.

A retail development group made up of government ministers and retailers has been set up try to address falling trade on King Street.

Senator Maclean said people needed incentives to shop locally and free parking was one option.

He said: "On its own it is not going to solve the retail situation. But as a part of package of measures to support retail I think it is worth trailing.

"Many other parts of that package need to be put in place at the same time to make any difference."

Figures released by the States of Jersey in September found that the island's retail sales were down by 2%.
