Former Venezuelan leader Ramon Velasquez has died at the age of 97 in the capital, Caracas.

Mr Velasquez was the interim president from 1993 to 1994 after his predecessor in office, Carlos Andres Perez, was impeached for embezzlement.

He was an opponent of Gen Marcos Perez Jimenez and was jailed for his part in chronicling the abuses committed during Gen Perez's military rule (1952-1958).

President Nicolas Maduro sent his condolences to the family on Twitter.

Mr Velasquez founded the Historical Archive of Miraflores, in which much of the writing on Venezuelan politics of the 19th and 20th centuries is kept.

He also served as senator and as a member of the country's chamber of deputies.
