US court finds man guilty of Tamil Tiger arms plot

A US court has found a Singaporean man guilty of conspiring to provide arms to Tamil Tiger rebels in Sri Lanka.

Balraj Naidu was convicted of trying to buy 28 tonnes of weapons in the US for the rebels in 2006. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

The court in Baltimore heard that Naidu tried to buy weapons from undercover agents posing as arms dealers.

The US designated the Tamil Tigers a terrorist group in 1997. They were defeated in Sri Lanka in May last year.
