Theft of artefacts has beeen widespread during war times
Police in Chilaw has arrested a man with eight artefacts suspected to be smuggled from Kuwait.

The suspect Abdul Raziq has worked in Kuwait for eight years.

While some artefacts were bought from a shop in Kuwait, the others were from a museum Raziq told the police.

There were seven statues and an ivory carving among the artefacts.

Six statues out of seven were made of ivory, Upali Ranasinhage, Senior Police Superintendent (SSP) of Chilaw police told the journalists.

As the artefacts were covered with cloth, Sri Lanka customs could not detect them when brought by ship and air, the suspect has told the police.

Police say that the suspect have looted these items during the Kuwait war.

Police have informed the archaeological department about the find.
