Farmer’s wife commits suicide
A farmer’s wife from Medirigiriya in Polonaruwa is reported to have committed suicide after not being able to fulfil her expectations of buying a piece of land with the money earned by selling the season’s harvest.

Dilika Madumali of Suhadapura, Medirigiya got married to her first cousin, R.G. Thilakaratna Banda, three months ago, and made plans to buy a piece of land with their income before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

The husband, Thilakarathna Banda, giving evidence at the inquest said that he had about 100 bags of paddy which he took to about 15 businessmen who buy paddy .Although the Government certified price of paddy is around 15 rupees none of them offered more than 12 rupees.

He described that his wife was so distraught by their misfortune, that she took poison to end her own life.

Commenting on the situation President of the Polonaruwa citizens committee K. Jayathissa said that government plans to buy paddy have failed miserably.

He said “Minister of Agriculture Anura Kumara Dissanayaka has not shown genuine commitment to listen to the farmers and resolve the problem.”

Jayathissa also blamed the media for not highlighting the plight of the farmer.
