Police drove away the demonstrators who gathered in Kandy on Tuesday(June 28) to protest against the nominees for the post of Diyawadana Nilame.
The demonstrators said that they want as Diyawadana Nilame, a true Buddhist who observe pansil (five precepts) and not persons supported by bribe.
The protest was called in by the Mawella Dharmapala Foundation and Somahimi Chinthana Padanama(Foundation by the Ven. Soma Thero)
It was dispersed by the police as they have not obtained permits to hold a public demonstration from the police.
"Any nominee for the post should come to the Dalada Maligawa and explain his suitablity for the post to the people", the demonstrators have said.
The protesters demanded that the esteemed post should not be set off for the giving out of VCDs, for a sum of Rs.100, 000 or dollars, J.A.L.Jayasinghe, Lankadeepa Correspondent, Kandy said.
According to tradition The Diyawadana Nilame was the minister who was in charge of water who supplied water to the King but today he is the caretaker of the Dalada Maligawa(Temple of the Tooth).
