Members of a lawyers association launched a strong protest against the decision to hold the final Law examinations at Colombo Law College in English language.
The decision to hold examinations in English medium was taken by the Legal Education Council (LEC) headed by the Chief Justice, Sarath. N Silva.
According to the reports, large number of lawyers on Tuesday held a demonstration opposite the Magistrate Court in Colombo to oppose the move by the LEC. The protest was organised by the Colombo Magistrate Court Lawyers' Association.
The President of the Colombo Magistrate Court Lawyers' Association, Gunaratne Wanniarachchi said that they are opposing the decision because it clearly violates the fundamental rights of the candidates.
"It is a fundamental right of the people to receive education from a language of their choice", he said.
Wanniarachchi said all lawyers should stand against LEC's decision, and fight to protect this violation of rights. said
Wanniarchchi said that Sri Lanka Lawyers Association is unable to take any action against this move by the LEC.
