'Release' Shantha Fernando

Sri Lanka police
Mr. Fernando was detained by the police under anti-terror laws
Human rights activists have called upon the authorities to immediately release Christian Council Secretary Shantha Fernando who was arrested under anti-terrorism laws.

Mr. Fernando, a leading human rights campaigner, was detained by the Terrorist Investigation Department (TID) on Friday at the Colombo international airport.

The police have detained Mr. Fernando, who was on his way to take part in a conference in Delhi, India.

General Secretary of Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne, who has visited Mr. Fernando in detention, has demanded that the government should apologise to the Christian community for the arrest Shantha Fernando.

"Clearly the government is afraid of the truth about human sufferings in Sri Lanka," a statement issued by Dr. Karunaratne said.
