International call to end impunity
In an open letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday, the International Press Freedom Mission to Sri Lanka stated that they were "extremely concerned over the ongoing spate of violent attacks against the media".

The letter demands the release of detained journalists

The International Mission proposed an 11-point plan encompassing judicial and security issues, to redress what they call the dangerous press freedom environment in the country.

The plan calls for the release of information from the investigation into editor Lasantha Wickrematunge's murder and the discharge of imprisoned journalists J.S. Tissainayagam, B. Jasiharan and V. Vallarmathy detained since March 2008.

It also demands provision of unconditional media access to the IDP camps.

The International Mission proposes the creation of a Special Prosecutor's Office dedicated to investigating crimes against the media. It also requests the introduction of several structural legal reforms to enable freedom and independence in the media.

Several journalists have been killed since 2007, and yet none of these murders has yet been solved, the International Mission said.

They said, "Much needs to be done immediately to ensure that Sri Lanka's journalists and independent news media in Sinhala, Tamil and English enjoy the freedom and safety to which they are entitled in a democracy."

The International Mission comprises of representatives from 12 international press freedom and media development organisations, including Reporters Without Borders, International Press Institute and World Press Freedom Committee.
