Big Buck's saw his record-breaking 18-race winning run ended when he was beaten by Knockara Beau and At Fishers Cross at Cheltenham after a 13-month absence with a tendon injury.
Paul Nicholls's 11-year-old, ridden for the first time in public by Sam Twiston-Davies, 21, made the running late on but was pipped to the line.
The four-time World Hurdle champion had not raced for 420 days.
Knockara Beau, ridden by Jan Faltejsek, was 66-1 for the 3m Cleeve Hurdle.
