President of Guernsey Athletics Club, Alun Williams, says the island will be sending a weakened athletics team to the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda.
The event in Bermuda runs from 13-19 July 2013 and clashes with the UK national championships.
"We think we've got 10-12 athletes who are in contention for the Commonwealth Games," Williams told BBC Guernsey.
"The Games, because they've been put back slightly, are right at the time we have the national championships."
But Williams says the impact of a trip to Bermuda on athletes' training and competition regimes is why the best may stay at home.
"You'd effectively have to take them out of competition for two or three weeks," he said.
But Williams says Guernsey, which topped the athletics medals table at the last games in the Isle of Wight with nine golds and four silvers, will still send a team to compete in Bermuda.
"We're hoping to send over a team of 18 athletes plus a couple of managers.
"That would be the kind of team that we're sending in any case because of the fact we've got the national championships."
