Guernsey distance running close to 'all-time high'
Olympic marathon hopeful Lee Merrien says Guernsey are in one of their best-ever periods for distance running.
The island dominated the Hampshire Cross-Country Championships with the women's team winning gold and Merrien claiming the individual men's title.
Louise Perrio won bronze in the women's race, the men's team finished third and Katy Rowe won the U15s Girls title.
"We're really close to being at an all-time high in terms of the strength-in-depth that we've got," said Merrien.
"To do as well as that is great for Guernsey distance running."
Merrien, who is hoping to to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, won the title he last raced for and which he also won four years ago, in his first competitive outing of 2012.
"It was nice to race," he added. "I was looking for a race around this time and it's been a while since I've raced in the mainland competitively.
"It was a satisfying result both individually and for the team as well."
