Belfast athlete Gareth Turnbull made a winning return to competitive action as he took victory in the St Patrick's Weekend Festival 5k event in Dublin.

Those behind 32-year-old Turnbull, who clocked 14 minutes and 26 seconds, included third-placer John Coghlan.

Turnbull overhauled long-time leader, Tallaght's Tomas Fitzpatrick, to take a five-second victory.

Coghlan, who recently broke the four-minute barrier for the mile indoors, was a further 19 seconds behind.

Letterkenny athlete Darren McBrearty was 53 seconds behind Turnbull in seventh while Paralympic champion Michael McKillop ran well to take eighth place a further five seconds back.

Turnbull has recently come back from a warm-weather training stint at altitude in Kenya and will be hoping for better luck in the coming months after being severely hit by injuries in recent seasons.

Sarah Treacy won the women's event in Dublin in a time of 16 minutes and 42 seconds.
