Ciara Mageean secures Irish universities double in Athlone
Ciara Mageean completed a middle-distance double at the Irish Universities Championships in Athlone by winning the 800m on Saturday.
The 20-year-old from Portaferry won the event in a time of 2.11 minutes.
It followed victory in the 1,500m on Friday, with Mageean unchallenged as she won in 4:29 in wet and windy conditions.
Olympic hopeful Mageean was beaten by Orla Drumm in Cork last weekend in her first race of the season.
Mageean set her personal best of 4:07.45 last year and is hoping to achieve the Olympic standard of 4:06.00.
She will run over 1,000m in Norway on 22 May before taking part in a 1500m in Morocco four days later which is already being earmarked as an opportunity for her to achieve the London 'A' standard.
Top athletics agent Nic Bideau, the husband of Irish athletics legend Sonia O'Sullivan, has helped secure 2010 world junior silver medallist Mageean a place in the field in Rabat.
The Morocco race is being specifically organised for athletes chasing the Olympic mark and a fast pace should be guaranteed.
