Guernsey's Sports Commission has appointed Tim Newenham, the performance director for British Shooting, as its new chief executive.

Newenham has worked as a consultant for the commission for the past year.

He is also a former GB javelin coach and spent five years as Tim Henman's strength and conditioning advisor.

"Tim's extensive knowledge and expertise will bring a valuable contribution to Guernsey sport," said commission chairman Stuart Falla.

"He is one of the UK's most respected coaches and over the years has been instrumental in the performance development of many of Britain's top athletes."

The commission is responsible for developing sport in Guernsey and gives bursaries and support for coaching and equipment in the island.

Newenham said he hoped to help Guernsey sport at all levels, but would be making the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 one of his priorities.

"Having assisted the commission over the past year, I am absolutely delighted to take up the post of CEO and be part of a great team of people, where we are all committed to developing sporting opportunities and developing sporting talent on Guernsey," he said.

"I see my skills adding to those of the team and together we can develop and extend the great work that Guernsey Sports Commission is undertaking which currently ranges from delivering PE in primary schools, to ensuring a fit and well prepared team are involved at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games."
