Newton Aycliffe runner Kate Avery is delighted with her Great Britain senior call-up for the European Team Championships despite missing out on England's Commonwealth Games squad.

Avery, 22, was pipped to selection for Glasgow in the 5km and 10km events, but will represent GB in the 3km in Braunschweig, Germany, over 21-22 June.

"It is different but I am thrilled to be running," Avery told BBC Tees.

"It's my first senior GB vest so I'm happy to be here."

Her Commonwealths disappointment earlier this week comes on the back of her not being selected for the World Indoor Championships back in February.

The New York-based university student missed the trial and was told she would not be considered, but is currently ranked second in her 3km specialist event and fifth in both the 5km and 10km, having run the European Championships' 'A' standard.

"I was named as the reserve in the 5km and 10km, I was fourth ranked in both of those events at the cut-off point," Avery added.

"It was frustrating, but I was a couple of seconds out on both.

"Especially in the 10km I didn't have a good day, it just didn't happen."
