Olympic triathlon medallist Jonny Brownlee was narrowly denied victory in the men's 5K event at Thursday's Armagh Road Races in the cathedral city.

Englishman Brownlee led in the closing stages before having to settle for third as he was pipped by US winner Joe Stilin and Liverpool's Daniel Cliffe.

England's Racheal Bamford won the women's 3K event.

Bamford finished ahead of Finn Valley's Teresa Doherty and another English athlete Gemma Hillier.

Last year's women's winner, Sligo athlete Mary Cullen, was a late withdrawal from the Armagh event.

Two more English athletes Katrina Wootton and Rachel Felton completed the top six along with Letterkenny's Anne Marie McGlynn.

The men's race produced a blanket finish with Dan Studley (Bristol & West AC), Polish steeplechaser Krystian Zalewski and another Englishman John Beattie completing the top six.

Brownlee took bronze at London 2012 when his brother Alistair clinched the gold medal and has also twice won the World Sprint Triathlon title.

Cullen's women's course record of 9:07 from last year remained intact while the men's mark also proved too much for the competitors despite the excellent conditions in Armagh.

Over 1,500 athletes competed at the meeting which also had several youth grade races.
