Bellaghy man Adam McMullen has missed out on a place in the long jump final at the European Indoor Championships.

Crusaders AC man McMullen, the first Irish competitor in action in Prague, would have made it if he had managed to match his personal best of 7.80m.

However, the 25-year-old's final jump of 7.53 was the best of his three efforts, following earlier jumps of 7.50 and 7.19.

McMullen finished 16th from a field of 24 athletes in Thursday's qualifying.

Sweden's Michel Torneus was produced the best jump with 7.97.

McMullen said he was disappointed but felt he had produced three solid jumps.

The Irish champion achieved his career best at the Irish National Indoor Championships in Athlone in February, when his leap of 7.80m was a 19cm improvement on his previous best.
