Northern Ireland athlete Leon Reid wins European U23 silver
Northern Ireland athlete Leon Reid continued his emergence as he won the 200 metres silver medal at the European Under-23 Championships in Estonia.
Reid, who represented Northern Ireland at last year's Commonwealth Games, clocked a season's best of 20.63 seconds in the final.
The 20-year-old finished .14 seconds behind Polish winner Karol Zalewski.
Letterkenny athlete Mark English finished a disappointing eighth in the 800m final in Tallinn.
Reid's time was only .01 outside his personal best and .09 short of Paul Brizzell's 15-year-old Northern Ireland record.
English won bronze at last year's European Championships and silver at the European Indoors in March but a back injury has hindered his fortunes this summer and Sunday's race was another disappointing performance by the Donegal man as he clocked 1:50.42 - almost six seconds outside his personal best.
The Letterkenny man was not even top Irish finisher in the final as Karl Griffin took sixth in 1:48.79 with Poland's Artur Kuciapski winning gold in 1:48.11.
English's Irish team-mate Marcus Lawler took seventh place in the men's 200m final in 20.94 where Leon Reid earned silver.
Meanwhile, south Derry athlete Adam McMullen finished 10th in the long jump final at the World University Games in South Korea.
McMullen's best leap of 7.61m was nine centimetres down on his qualifying mark and 19 centimetres shy of his personal best set indoors earlier this year.
Kevin Batt finished ninth in the men's 5000m final with a 14:28.74 clocking.
