New Zealand's Valerie Adams will not defend her shot put title at this month's World Championships in Beijing as she has not recovered from surgery.

The 30-year-old has held every world, Olympic and Commonwealth title since 2006.

She was unbeaten for five years until returning from injury earlier this season after shoulder and elbow operations.

"I'm a realist and know I'm not ready just yet," Adams said on social media.external-link

"It's been a challenge since my surgery on my elbow, especially as it has/is taking more time then I thought it would.

"But that's life and I must roll with the punches."
