I dare say this is a record beating Bolt won't lose sleep over.
Allyson Felix is a 100m/200m/400m runner. She is 48th on the all time 100m list, 6th on the 200m list and 20th on the 400m list. She has no individual US records nevermind world. Very high quality athlete, but hardly the statistics of an all time great. Achieving the most medals is all about longevity in the sport and the strength of the US relay squads.Great achievement but not exactly wow.
Wow! Well done Allyson. What a record to break. An amazing athlete.Maybe Bolt should make a comeback to get a few more golds.
@85, it may be fact that she has won more medals but it’s as comparable as saying Felix has broken Katherine Grainger's record for number of golds at a WC, so why use such a provocative headline? Especially when the article has nothing to do with the number of golds she has won compared to Bolt. The debate on this thread has shifted away from the issue she raises as a result.
All I see when I look at pictures of these Americans winning championships is disrespect for the flag - draping on body and touching the ground. I fell like it takes away from their personal victories somehow.
@ 84 It is not a click bait headline it is completely factual you seem to have missed the beating Bolts 'medal' record which is what happened. Yes they competed against different people but neither the article nor the headline are trying to suggest otherwise so I am not sure what your issue is.
@81 you’re right, the article is about one of the all time great female athletes and the issues she raises around athletes and maternity and so the discussion should be. Instead, because of the BBC’s click bait headline, we’re debating gender politics
@82Agree entirely. Felix is a very fine all round sprinter but given her huge amount of relay golds she's not really on the same level as Bolt. Has 6 Olympic golds but 5 of them are in relays. Also, records have come in relays rather then individual events. Her legacy is as a great team runner more than as a great individual athlete.
Shows that total number of medals won isn't that good an indicator of sporting greatness. Her total is largely due to the strength in depth of the US relay teams and that she competes at a double distance. This year's 400m champion is 21 years old and ran much faster than Felix ever has, but will never be able to achieve her medal total because her country doesn't have the relay runners.
Some idiotic comments on here from trolls who cant even read ... for me this is a timely article celebrating one of the all time greats of the sport, and highlighting her record in terms that even ignorant illiterates should be able to understand. Thanks for recognising a wonderful female athlete for her genuine merits, instead of the recent obsession with ramming gender politics down our throats!
