Matthews stays in pink after stage win

Australian Michael Matthews extends his Giro d'Italia lead to 21 seconds as he avoids a late crash that scatters the field to win stage six.

Matthews, 23, was followed home in a small group by compatriot Cadel Evans, who is now his closest rival in the general classification.

On a day of crashes, Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez was forced out of the race after suffering broken ribs and thumb while Irish contender Nicolas Roche finished more than 15 minutes behind Matthews after taking a tumble.
