Smurthwaite to make up Vale shortfall

Port Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite warns that he will have use his own money to cover an expected shortfall on the League One club's budget given to manager Rob Page.

"With the two that have joined us this week (Ben Purkiss and Anthony Grant), that will take us up to about £1.85 million, which is £150,000 over budget already," he told BBC Radio Stoke.

"That means Rob has to look at existing players to see what we can do there, but I estimate I will have to make a personal contribution of £350,000.

"I set a budget which the manager could use which he's pent and we haven't got the squad that I believe we need to be competitive in League One."
