Steven Gerrard describes his relationship with former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez as "distant".
The 35-year-old former Reds captain, who left Anfield in May after 17 years to play in the United States, revealed the details in his autobiography.
"I can pick up the phone and speak to all of my previous Liverpool managers, except for Rafa," said the LA Galaxy midfielder.
Speaking to Football Focus, Gerrard says he "didn't know if he wanted me, whether he wanted to sell me" and that wanting to get a compliment from the Spaniard, now in charge at Real Madrid, drove him to become a better player.
