On This Day: Niki Lauda wins third F1 title by half a point

Thirty years ago today, on 21 October 1984, Niki Lauda won his third Formula 1 world title after beating his McLaren team-mate Alain Prost to the title by just half a point.

The Austrian driver had to finish at least second at the final race of the season in Portugal to win the championship, but could only qualify 11th on the grid.

However he managed to storm through the field to finish second behind Prost to win his third world title, after his triumphs for Ferrari in 1975 and 1977.
