McIlroy felt comeback triumph was on

Rory McIlroy says he thought he had a chance to win the US Open as he charged into contention on the final day at Chambers Bay.

The world number one moved to within two shots of the lead after playing his opening 13 holes in six under par on Sunday but then lost his momentum as he slipped back into a share of ninth place by the finish.

"I felt when I made the birdie on 13 that I really had a good chance to post a number that the guys would have to think about," said McIlroy after his closing 66.

McIlroy finished five behind winner Jordan Spieth who completed back-to-back major wins after Dustin Johnson three-putted the last from 12 feet.
