Wigan Warriors rocked on Catalans Dragons Super League debut

Super League explored new territories when French newcomers Catalans Dragons made their bow in February 2006, with Wigan Warriors the opposition on their debut fixture at the Stade Aime Giral.

Despite the failure of the short-lived Paris Saint Germain venture, hopes were high that the introduction of a club based in the French rugby league heartland would be a success, and so it has proved.

Some familiar faces, including star Kiwi playmaker Stacey Jones plus current coaches Laurent Frayssinous and Jerome Guisset, played their part in giving the Perpignan public an evening to savour, as Ian Millward's Warriors were edged in a high-scoring 38-30 classic.

It was the start of 10 years of top-flight rugby league in the south of France, a landmark the club are marking throughout this 20th season of Super League.
