Thomson closing gap on Vendee leader

Sailor Alex Thomson remains in the hunt to make history as the first Briton to win the Vendee Globe round-the-world race.

Welsh-born Thomson, whose Hugo Boss Racing team are based in Gosport, continues to close the gap on current leader Armel Le Cleac'h in the closing stages.

Thomson, 42, was less than 100 miles behind Frenchman Le Cleac'h to the south west of Cape Verde Islands as the pair head for Western France.

His team back at base in Hampshire are also preparing to head for the finish line to welcome him.
