Tied at 2-2 going into the match, world number 161 Ward was no match for his more experienced opponent who won in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-4.
Earlier, Fabio Fognini had kept the tie alive by outplaying Andy Murray to win 6-3 6-3 6-4 on the clay.
