Dutch baseball player Greg Halman has been stabbed to death in Rotterdam and his younger brother has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Halman, 24, played as an outfielder for Major League side Seattle Marinersexternal-link.

He joined the club in 2004 after a spell in the minor leagues and played 35 games for the Mariners last season.

A Rotterdam police spokesman said: "A 24-year-old died this morning in a stabbing and we have arrested the 22-year-old brother of the victim."

Halman helped promote the sport in Europe by holding coaching clinics with youngsters and he was part of the Netherlands side which won the 2007 European Baseball Championship.
