Juan Manuel Marquez delivered a devastating right hand to knock out Manny Pacquiao in the sixth round of their welterweight bout in Las Vegas.

Mexican Marquez, 39, floored Pacquiao, who lay motionless on the canvas for some time, for a first win over the Filipino in their four-match rivalry.

Pacquiao, 33, had won the previous two encounters, with one draw.

It was a second successive defeat for Pacquiao after a controversial loss to Timothy Bradley in June.

Pacquiao had already been down in the third round - the first time in 39 rounds between the two that the seven-weight world champion was knocked from his feet - after Marquez threw a short right.

But Pacquiao recovered to ground Marquez in the fifth and the pair were exchanging heavy blows in the sixth.

However, with one second of the round remaining, a bloodied Marquez threw a huge overhand right that had Pacquiao out cold before he hit the canvas under the ropes.

Pacquiao, who now has 54 wins, five defeats and two draws, did not move for about two minutes before finally being dragged to his feet by his team.

Marquez's victory will go some way to make up for his narrow points defeat to Pacquiao in November 2011, which many observers believed to be the wrong decision.

That fight - the third of their series - gave Marquez his sixth defeat of a career spanning nearly two decades.

It is a career that has seen him win the WBA featherweight title, the WBC super-featherweight title and the WBO and WBA lightweight titles.

After the fight, Pacquiao, who was leading 47-46 on all three judges' scorecards, said he will seek a fifth meeting with Marquez, who now has 55 wins, six defeats and one draw.

"Why not? It's a good fight," said Pacquiao. "I did my best. I know that I got him in the last couple of rounds but I started to be over-confident and I got hit by a solid punch. I did not expect that punch."

Marquez said: "I am not thinking about any fight. I just want to celebrate.

"Right now in my future I don't know what is coming but I am going to rest and I am going to celebrate with my family and my friends in Mexico."

Asked whether Pacquiao should continue, his trainer Freddie Roach said he would assess his charge in the gym and make a decision.

"If I see him declining in the gym and I think he's going to get hurt I'll tell him to retire and I think he will if I tell him," Roach told BBC Sport.

"He was boxing well and winning the round big and he walked into a short, picture-perfect punch."

    More perceived muscle mass is normal. Your body changes as you get older and with continued training and development, you get bulkier. It's a natural occurance.

    Best KO since Robinson on Fullmer.Punch hit Manny moving forward with the force of a ring post and they could have counted to 100.Manny should call it a career, he is one of the greatest of his generation, has given so much to the sport and has a terrific career ahead of him in Politics and can go out with all his health.

    You obviously don't know anything about boxing. Ricky Hatton is finished, did you not see his last fight?!! Pacquiao wouldn't even have to train and would still give him a good beating. Pacquiao is not finished, he was winning this fight untill he walked into that punch, he made a mistake, he'll be back. Hatton couldn't even beat any of the domestic level fighters now, he's done.

    Not sure why my comment got a vote down - the difference between Marquez of 2 years ago (a professional figher of 16 years then) and now is unbelievable. He has grown and accumulated muscle mass like a teenager at the age of 38 - it would be impossible to say he has cheated, but can people really deny that there isn't something strange occuring? Surely people can see something isn't quite right?

    It's not bias, it's an observation. Marquez has more muscle mass now than when he was in his 20's. Only a moron wouldn't question that. Anyway, I don't follow either fighter much and the only reason I knew Marquez won is that the BBC have plastered it all over their site. It was a crunching shot though. Manny was asleep before his face made contact with the canvas.

    These 2 are warriors....Ko's, points win, draws...they've had it. Manny is right when talking about the poss of a 5th that "why not, its a good fight". Anyone of them truely can win. I dont have as much boxing knowledge as you guys, and I know some of you r right when you talk about Manny not ending up like other boxers...but its hard to not want to watch a 5th when this is such a great spectacle.

    @Poohbear I fail to see your argument, not a good shot but an exquisite one. A trip would lead me to believe that his footwork was mistimed and mistakes at this level are punished. Manny had the better of the earlier rounds but that shot was timed to perfection, the warning signs were there when he got dropped in the third and he did not learn. Nothing discredits the magnitude of this win for me.

    I don't see clearly knockout punch. Is it stronger punch than 3rd round punch it floored Manny?
    I must confess Marquez has most stronger jaw than other fighter in current Boxing.
    Other guy may be finished in fifth round. Marquez was taken a lot of big hit from Manny.
    I can't wait to see their Fifth fight.

    44. riskrat - Yeah, you're right about boxing needing to wheedle out those doping. I grew up watching Daily Thompson and thought he was Godly, but soon went off athletics due to the wholesale use of PED. I googled 'Marquez on steroids' after my post & I'm way behind the bandwagon on that front. It seems allot of people are questioning his training methods & those he employs to manage his fitness.

    The ship has sailed for any kind of super fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao now I guess. Or it's never going to generate quite the interest, not to mention $$, it would have when the two should have got in on.

    An inactive Floyd and Manny past that peak?? Be a top fight, but they both let themselves down so badly and tarnished their legacy imho.

    That's what's ruined boxing really.

    For those saying Manny didn't agree to blood tests...you are wrong. You'll find plenty of info on it if you take off your Mayweather hats.

    Manny agreed to the ring size (large so Floyd could run away), glove weight (again to suit Floyd) and the venue.

    What he didn't agree to was a 60/40 split of the PPV money.

    Floyd ducked Manny when he was at his peak. Cannot be considered a great.

    Anyone out there calling for his immediate retirement because of this one knockout do not know what they are talking about. He was winning the fight and looking good. Just look at the stats. It was a great shot and he was bein over confident. He is not washed up or in serious decline. Yes boxers go on too long but pacman is not in that bracket yet. There's every chance he'd do marquex next time.

    Shame Manny and Floyd couldn't get the fight on two or three years ago when they were both at their peak.
    If the fight takes place now it will be a joke. I wouldn't pay to see it.
    The fact these two never met at their peak, for whatever reason, has damamged boxing's reputation badly.
    Personally, if you have to boxers who are obviously the best, they must be forced to meet or be banned for 4 years.

    When Manny fights Marquez again (as they will) it should be under strict Olympic style drug testing. Let's see what happens then. Meanwhile, I suspect that the authorities will have this "scientific trainer" of Marquez (and Marion Jones et al) under strict surveillance. Pacquiao by a knock-out in fight 5 (or Marquez fails a test).

    Nav, what are you smoking? Just because 25,000 Prince Myshkins would go to Vegas has no bearing on the result, which would be Hatton on his back, or face counted out.

    Did you watch his last fight? Hatton always led with his chin at the best of times, but the last fight was a joke. He couldn't beat a guy Malignaggi beat. Time to quit.
