To those who raved about Colin Jones v Kirkland Jones ... thanks! Before my time, but prompted me to watch on YouTube... fantastic
@44 Not many could say Buchanan- Watt was a great fight, not many there to see it for a start. Watt-Nash was decent..Rudkin-McGowan was excellent and 2 Great fighters, Walter passed away last week, certainly was on a level with Lynch and Paterson.
Post 19 is a good shout. Kirkland Laing boxed Colin Jones' ears off yet got KO'd in R9 TWICE! The quality wasn't great but Mark Kaylor v Errol Christie was a brutal brawl with a lot of needle. Kaylor always denied there was any racial element. I recall about 8 knock-downs before Christie was put out for good.Herol Graham dominated Kaylor & would've done the same to Benn/Eubank if ...
The only all-British world title fights in the old days were at flyweight: Lynch v Kane was a great fight & Lynch's last hurrah. My recollection is Kane fought Paterson, Paterson Monaghan & Monaghan Terry Allen, all for the world title. Of course there were no McDs or Mars Bars in those days so a lot of adults could train down to 8 stone
There obviously were many great all-british fights before 1971 but they tended not to be for world titles because, in those days, there was only ONE world title.Harvey v McAvoy, Harvey v Mills, Rudkin v McGowan, Buchanan v Watt, Danahar v Boon & Stracey v Green all spring to mind.
The Benn/Eubank/Watson fights were a bit special, though obviously the Eubank v Watson fight ended in tragedy. I remember Haye v Thompson being a good fight where the older fighter schooled the later champion. Surely there were better domestic fights involving the likes of Graham, Lang, Hamed and Calzaghe that rate above the Chisora v Haye fight.
The best wars were all mid fifties to early sixties, the writer of this article wasnt born till about 1995, shes a loonie.
Haye vs Chisora - no titles on the line, no sanction by the BBBC and the result of a drunken fight at a press conference where grown men were glassing each other. Must. Do. Better.
Frampton-Quigg is definitely a stronger rival than some of the others. Would have it ahead of Chisora-Fury for that wasn't a close contest and not a world title fight, Cooper-Bugner as it wasn't a world title fight. Groves-Froch were close fights but Froch was superior while Lewis outclassed Bruno. Nothing will match Benn-Eubank in British terms but Frampton-Quigg is big as its a unification bout.
Ray Cattouse v George Feeney. Youtube it. This article is as bad as it is funny. Haye v Chisora? Not even in top 100.
Boxing is dead and has been ages. Go and have a look at some classics on Youtube like Chris Eubank v Nigel Benn I and II. Those were real fights and real rivalries. Not this pathetic sham.
I was amazed to see that UK has 12 world champs, nearly all boxers general public have never heard of. British champs used to be household names, now boxing is a shadow of it's former self. I put this mainly to being on ghetto channels and pay per view so the public don't get mass exposure to them. The number of world champs there are also make the sport a joke. A shame as it was once a noble one.
Haye v Carl Thompson? Eubank v Carl Thompson?Thompson was a real old school tough guy like Nigel Benn.
Whoever wrote this powder-puff piece must be under 30 years of age. And not very adept at their research either. So many great all-British fights, many mentioned on the thread. The Graham-Kaylor one sticks out for me but so so many. And then they tarnish the whole thing with Chisora-Haye. Fools.
Dennis Andries v Keith Bristol 1986
Seem to remember Herol Graham vs Mark Kaylor in 1986 being special. Certainly miles better than Haye vs the Bouncer!
Phil Mitchell vs Grant Mitchell , in The Arches garage. Proper grudge match between two East End boys (doesn't get more British than that!), ending with one of them unconcious at the bottom of a pit. And it wasn't pay per view!
Haye vs Chisora!! Don't make me laugh
