BBC Sport - Nick Blackwell: Kellie Maloney calls for boxing weigh-ins on fight day
Maloney calls for fight-day weigh-ins
- From the section Boxing
Weigh-ins should take place on the same day as a fight, to mitigate injuries linked to dehydration, boxing promoter Kellie Maloney has said.
"I think it’s something to do with dehydration, making weight, because the fluid around the brain is drained out when fighters have to make weight," Maloney told the Today programme.
The board "need to act now and do something, and they need to go against the rest of the boxing world and bring weigh-ins back to the same day...so fighters can't cheat on the weight," she added.
Maloney's comments followed Nick Blackwell's British middleweight title fight against Chris Eubank Jr, which left him with a small bleed on the brain, after which he was placed in an induced coma.
