Guernsey's Sarah Mercier broke the island 1500m record in her heat at the Commonwealth Games.
The 23-year-old clocked a time of 4 mins 24.05 secs at Hampden Park to finish in eighth place.
"I wasn't expecting to run a personal best at all," she told BBC Radio Guernsey after her race.
"I ran my best last year and I haven't been able to run so quick this year, I was hoping to get close to it, but to beat it, I'm really happy with that."
Mercier's Games is not yet over as she will also compete in the 5000m on Saturday.
"I'm hoping to run a personal best in that. That's probably my stronger event, so I'm looking forward to it," she added.
