Gloucestershire's bowlers moved them into a position of power against Kent on day two at Canterbury.
In reply to the visitors' 292, Kent slumped to 108-6 before debutant Adam Ball (46) and James Tredwell (44) helped them to recover to 208 all out.
Jon Lewis and David Payne each picked up three wickets, Ian Saxelby and Will Gidman taking two apiece.
Azhar Mahmood removed Ian Cockbain to leave Gloucestershire 40-1 at the close, a lead of 124.
It was only the performance of 18-year-old Ball that provided any real cheer for Kent, who saw opener Joe Denly suffer a broken thumb.
The stand of 70 between Ball and Tredwell was Kent's best for any wicket so far this season, a record that is likely to need improving on if they are to take anything from this match.

"Kent may need to re-evaluate what they have for breakfast or what side of bed they get out of after another sub-standard morning session.
"Their top order were undone by a mixture of good balls and poor shot selection but their main problem is that not one batsman is going on to score 100, or even 50.
"On a positive note, Kent's lower order looked strong again. James Tredwell is the most consistent and dependable batsman. In another confident knock, his footwork was extremely precise.
"The plaudits must be reserved for 18-year-old Adam Ball, whose 46 on debut could not have been made under more testing circumstances. Despite an auspicious start, the youngster grew in confidence and his technique driving straight and on the back foot was textbook."
