Marcus Trescothick made a half-century but his Somerset side struggled on day one against Sussex at Hove.
Trescothick (63) shared an opening stand of 71 with Arul Suppiah (31) but after the former England man fell, the visitors crumbled.
Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took three wickets and Amjad Khan picked up two as Somerset slipped from 117-1 to 197-7.
Alex Barrow (37 no) made his highest first-class score, with Somerset 199-7 when bad light forced an early close.
After being asked to bat by Sussex skipper Mike Yardy, Somerset openers Trescothick and Suppiah made serene progress before Suppiah was lbw to James Anyon in the penultimate over before lunch.
Trescothick then added 46 with Nick Compton (19), only for rain to force a 45-minute delay after which Somerset lost four wickets in 15 balls.
Trescothick looped a catch to gully off Amjad, while Compton was brilliantly caught by diving wicketkeeper Matt Prior off Rana.
The same bowler had Peter Trego caught at second slip before Jos Buttler was trapped lbw by Amjad.
Barrow, playing only his third first-class game, found some support from Lewis Gregory and Craig Meschede.
Gregory (10) had his off-stump uprooted by Anyon and Meschede (18) was brilliantly caught by Yardy at second slip off Rana, with the light ending play soon after.
